By Far built its name on footwear before it built one on bags, and the discipline carried straight across. The Bulgarian house works in a nineties register: small, hard-edged shoulder shapes carried high under the arm on a strap short enough to keep them there, sharp piping, hardware kept to a minimum. The silhouette does the talking and nothing rattles against anything else.

The handbags came later, launched in 2018, and the range has settled into a handful of recurring shapes: compact zip-top shoulder bags, top-handle styles closed with a buckle detail, crossbodies on removable straps, minis hung on a fine chain. Croc-embossed calf is the finish most associated with the label, though nubuck, suede and patent all appear, and the palette runs from quiet leathers through to sharp pastels. The shoes still sit alongside them, all shine and structure.

What does By Far make besides bags?

Footwear, and it came first: By Far was known for shoes before the handbags arrived. The shoe range runs from ballet flats and loafers through mules, heeled sandals and boots, and it follows the same logic as the bags, with clean lines, high-shine or textured leathers and very little hardware. Sneakers, belts and small leather accessories fill out the rest of the range.

How do I care for croc-embossed leather?

The embossing is pressed into the calfskin, so the texture holds unless the leather is allowed to dry out. Wipe with a soft dry cloth after use and work a light leather conditioner in occasionally with a cloth rather than a brush, following the direction of the pattern so nothing collects in the grooves. Keep it out of direct sun, and store it stuffed and dust-bagged so the sides stay square.
