A trench is defined by its shape and details: a belted waist, storm flap across the shoulder, epaulettes, a back yoke and usually a double-breasted front, traditionally in tightly woven cotton gabardine that resists light rain without being sealed. A raincoat is defined by performance instead, using a coated, laminated or waxed shell, often with taped seams and a hood, to keep out sustained rain. A trench can serve as one, but most are worn as outerwear first.

Measure your chest over the thickest layer you intend to wear underneath, arms down and the tape level beneath the armpits. Compare that against the coat's flat chest measurement doubled, and look for roughly 10 to 15cm more than your body figure on a tailored overcoat, more again on a parka. Sleeve length matters just as much: the coat cuff should cover the jacket cuff by about 2cm, or the layer beneath shows at the wrist.
