Belt sizing runs about two inches larger than your trouser waist, so a 34-inch waist takes a size 36 belt and a 36 takes a 38. If your waist is an odd number, round up to the next even number and then add two. In centimetres, multiply the belt size in inches by 2.54, so a 36 is roughly 91 cm. Sizes are measured from the buckle prong to the middle hole, which is where the belt should fasten so you keep adjustment either way.

Width is the quickest formality signal there is. A strap of about 30 to 35 mm slips through dress trouser loops, sits under a jacket without bulk and pairs with a small pin buckle. Around 35 to 40 mm is the everyday range for chinos and jeans, where a wider strap fills the loops properly and can carry a heavier buckle. Check the loops before you buy: most tailored trousers will not take a strap over 35 mm.
