Denier is a yarn-weight measure, the weight in grams of 9,000 metres of the fibre, so it describes thickness rather than quality. In practice it maps to opacity. Ten to 20 denier is sheer and lightly evens skin tone; 30 to 50 is semi-opaque, showing colour with a hint of skin beneath; 60 to 100 reads as solid; anything heavier is dense and warm enough to stand in for a legging. Higher denier is also more durable, which is why sheers ladder first.

Most ladders start as you pull the tights on, and the rest come down to how they are washed. File your nails, take off rings and watches, and gather each leg down to the toe so you roll the fabric up rather than dragging it. Moisturise and let it absorb fully first, since dry skin catches nylon. Wash by hand in cool water, or in a mesh bag on a delicate cycle, and never tumble dry, because heat destroys the elastane. If a run starts, clear nail varnish at each end will hold it for the evening.
