A keychain is built around a split ring or swivel clip, so keys thread on and off, on hardware sized to take the weight. A bag charm is made to be seen: usually a lobster clasp rather than a ring, a longer drop so it hangs clear of the bag body, and finishes such as leather, enamel or shearling that a pocket would scuff or chip. Plenty of pieces do both jobs, which is why the two terms get used interchangeably.

Clip it to a hardware point rather than the leather itself: a D-ring, the base of a handle, a zip pull or a strap loop. Avoid hanging it from a thin handle, where the clasp swings against the same spot and burnishes it. If the charm has a metal back that will rest against the bag, a small felt dot behind it stops the contact. Take charms off before storing the bag, since pressure marks set over time.
