Most of these spend more time hanging off a bag than sitting in a pocket, and that is the real dividing line. On one side are the working pieces: split-ring key rings, swivel-clip fobs that unhook from a strap in one motion, zip key pouches, and folding leather key cases with hooks inside for four to six keys.

On the other, decoration does the job. Figural and plush charms, tassels and letter tags clip to a strap or a zip pull, as do engraved plaques, mirror and coin discs and beaded chains. Carabiner styles bridge both. Finishes cover smooth and grained calfskin, saffiano and enamel over brass, along with resin, crystal-set metal and shearling. Hardware is gold-tone, silver-tone or palladium.

What is the difference between a keychain and a bag charm?

A keychain is built around a split ring or swivel clip, so keys thread on and off, on hardware sized to take the weight. A bag charm is made to be seen: usually a lobster clasp rather than a ring, a longer drop so it hangs clear of the bag body, and finishes such as leather, enamel or shearling that a pocket would scuff or chip. Plenty of pieces do both jobs, which is why the two terms get used interchangeably.

How do you attach a bag charm without marking the leather?

Clip it to a hardware point rather than the leather itself: a D-ring, the base of a handle, a zip pull or a strap loop. Avoid hanging it from a thin handle, where the clasp swings against the same spot and burnishes it. If the charm has a metal back that will rest against the bag, a small felt dot behind it stops the contact. Take charms off before storing the bag, since pressure marks set over time.
