Denim earns its place by ageing visibly. Classic indigo denim is a cotton twill woven with a dyed warp and an undyed weft, which is why the back of the cloth sits paler than the face. The dye wraps the outside of each yarn rather than soaking through it, so every point that rubs — a brim edge, a crown fold, the line a hand takes each time it reaches for the peak — slowly lightens towards the pale core underneath. Black and overdyed denim behaves the same way; only the colour it fades towards is different, a warm grey rather than white.

Weight and finish change the character. A lighter twill softens quickly and follows the shape of the head, while a firmer one holds a structured crown and keeps its brim line for longer. Washed and rinsed cloth arrives already broken in and stays close to the colour you bought, and darker, less-processed denim does its fading later, on the wearer's own terms. Patchwork and overdyed panels age at different rates across the same cap, which is rather the point of them.

How do I wash a denim cap?

By hand, in cool water, with a little mild detergent worked into the sweatband using a soft brush. Rinse, then press the water out instead of wringing. Keep it out of the machine and the dryer, because most brims carry a stiffener that warps with heat and the panel seams pull out of true. Dry it over something rounded, a folded towel or an upturned bowl, so the crown keeps its shape, and allow a full day.

Will the dye rub off onto other things?

New denim crocks, meaning loose surface dye transfers on contact, and it is worse when the cloth is damp. Darker, less-processed indigo is the heaviest offender and can mark pale collars, light scarves and cream fabric. A washed or rinsed finish gives up far less. Wiping the brim and sweatband with a damp cloth lifts the loose dye without soaking a structured cap, and transfer settles down over the first few wears, while the fading it comes from carries on for years.
