European sock sizing uses the shoe-size range the sock is knitted to fit. So 35-38 covers roughly a US women's 5 to 7.5, and 39-42 covers about a US women's 8 to 10.5, or a US men's 6.5 to 8.5. On a boundary, size up: a sock stretched to its limit thins at the heel and rolls at the cuff. Treat the ranges as indicative, since wool blends felt down slightly with washing while cotton relaxes.

Most slipping is a fit problem rather than a grip problem. Liners are the exception to the usual advice on sock sizing: take the smaller size if you are between two, since a liner that is too large has slack at the heel to work its way down. Look for a silicone grip strip at the heel, a heel tab, and a deeper U-shaped back rather than a shallow straight cut. Cotton with four to five percent elastane holds its shape; pure cotton stretches out. Wash warm rather than hot, and skip the dryer, which kills the elastane.
