A frame is decided by the shape of its front and the width it spans. Rectangular and square fronts cut a straight line across the face, aviators taper to a teardrop under a double bridge, and round and oval lenses soften the features beneath them. Wayfarer and D-frame shapes sit between the angular and the round, while wraparound and shield fronts run as a single sweep with no visible break at the bridge.

Construction decides the wear. Acetate fronts carry colour through the material and hold a heavier profile; thin metal and titanium rims all but disappear. Rimless builds hang the lens off the bridge and temples alone, while semi-rimless keeps a partial rim, usually along the top, and leaves the lower edge open. Sizes are printed inside the arm as lens width, bridge and temple length in millimetres. Lenses run from solid tints to gradient, mirrored and polarised finishes, and the nose rests on either a fixed keyhole bridge or adjustable pads.

What do the numbers printed inside sunglasses arms mean?

They are the frame's measurements in millimetres, always in the same order: lens width, bridge width, then temple length, printed as something like 52-18-140. Lens width usually runs 40 to 60 mm, bridges 14 to 24 mm, and temples 120 to 150 mm. Look on the inside of the left arm first; if nothing is printed there, check the inner bridge or behind a nose pad. Compare the numbers against a pair you already know fits rather than guessing from your face.

Are polarised lenses worth it over a plain tint?

A tint cuts overall brightness. A polarised filter also blocks the horizontally aligned light that bounces off water, snow, wet roads and car hoods, which is what causes the worst of the glare. Driving and anything near water are where the difference is obvious. The trade-off is that polarisation can dim or blotch some LCD screens — car dashboards and phone displays included — at certain angles, so a few people still prefer a plain tint for everyday wear.
