A slide has one continuous band running across the instep, so the foot enters from the back and nothing passes between the toes. A flip flop uses a thong: a Y-shaped strap anchored between the first and second toe and out to each side of the footbed. Slides stay on with less effort and suit a wider foot; flip flops flex more and pack flatter.

Aim for about 5mm of footbed showing behind the heel and in front of the longest toe; the foot should sit inside the moulded edge, not hang over it. Sandals are usually cut on the same length as a sneaker, so take your normal size and size up if you fall between sizes or the strap sits tight across the instep. In men's sizing a UK 8 is typically an EU 42 and a US 9, so check which scale a chart uses before ordering.
