An adjustable cap takes in roughly 55 to 61 cm, whether it closes on a webbing strap, a metal slider or a snap, so the closure does the fine work rather than the size. Set it so the band sits level and stays put when you look down, without leaving a deep mark.

Cotton moves as soon as it gets wet: the yarns swell, the weave draws in, and heat and tumbling push it further still. A cool hand wash and a flat air dry leave the crown close to where it was, while a hot wash or a dryer can tighten the band enough to feel. Pre-shrunk and washed cloth moves least; rigid, unwashed denim moves most and can pull in noticeably the first time it is soaked. Spot clean where you can, wash cool, skip the dryer, and the fit holds.
