Fill power measures how much space an ounce of down takes up when lofted, so it describes the quality of the down rather than how much is in the jacket. Around 550-650 is serviceable, 700-800 is very good, and 850 and above is expedition territory. High fill power gives the same warmth for less weight, but fill weight in grams matters as much: 200 g of 700-fill is warmer than 90 g of 800-fill.

Both are cropped and finished with ribbed collar, cuffs and hem, so the giveaway is the body. A bomber uses one material throughout, typically nylon, suede or leather, and closes with a zip. A varsity, or letterman, splits materials: a wool melton body with leather or vinyl sleeves, and a snap front rather than a zip. Varsity jackets also tend to carry chest lettering and contrast striping on the rib trims.
