A minaudiere is a small, rigid evening case, made in metal, resin or hard-shell rather than soft leather, and often decorated with crystals, enamel or engraving so it reads as much like jewellery as a bag. The form dates from 1930s Paris. Interiors are minimal: a lipstick, a card, a folded note, sometimes a phone if the case is a modern one. Most come with a fine chain that tucks inside so the piece is carried in the hand.

Measure the interior, not the exterior. A current large-format phone is roughly 16cm tall and 7.8cm wide, and a slim case adds two to three millimetres each way, so the internal opening needs to be about 17 by 8.5cm to take it flat. An envelope flap eats one to two centimetres of usable height, and a rigid box or frame clutch has fixed internal walls that will not give at all. Soft pouches flex; hard cases do not.
