Take two measurements with a soft tape. First the band: pull the tape snug around the ribcage directly under the bust, level all the way round. Working in inches, round that to the nearest even number for a UK or US band; working in centimetres, round to the nearest 5 for a European band. Then the bust at its fullest point, tape level and not compressing. Subtract the underbust measurement from the bust: 2.5 cm, or one inch, of difference is an A cup, 5 cm a B, 7.5 cm a C, 10 cm a D, in 2.5 cm steps from there. UK, European and US charts differ, so check each one.

Sister sizes are bras with the same cup volume but a different band. Going down a band and up a cup, 34C to 32D, keeps the cup the same size while tightening the band; going up a band and down a cup does the reverse. It is the fix for a band problem: the cup fits but the band rides up your back, or the band digs in while the cup is right. A cup that gapes on a band already sitting well is a different problem, and the answer there is to drop a cup letter and leave the band alone. The cup letter means nothing without the band number attached.
