An overcoat is tailored rather than insulated, cut from wool or a wool blend with a lined body, set-in sleeves and a shape meant to sit over a jacket. Choose a parka below freezing and an overcoat for dry cold or anything that needs tailoring.

Buy an overcoat one size up from your jacket only if the shoulders pinch; the seam should sit where your own shoulder ends, not past it. You want roughly 5 cm of room across the chest with the coat buttoned over a jacket, enough to close it without strain. Sleeves should cover the jacket cuff by about 1 cm, and a length hitting just above or below the knee suits most heights.
