Inseam length sets the whole shape — a short 13 cm leg sits well above the knee, a mid length lands on the thigh, and longer cuts reach the knee itself. Above that, the waist decides how a pair wears: an elasticated waistband with a drawcord moves with the body, while a flat, tailored waistband with a clasp or side adjusters holds a cleaner line.

Board shorts run longest and stiffest, built for movement; classic swim trunks sit shorter with a mesh lining, and briefs and square-cut styles remove the leg altogether. Quick-dry polyester and nylon dominate, often with elastane for stretch and a water-repellent finish, and mesh linings, drainage eyelets and a zipped or velcro back pocket are the details worth checking.
