Women's Hats

A hat is settled by two things: how the crown holds the head and how far the brim reaches past it. Knit styles take the first approach alone, with beanies pulled down over the ear on a folded cuff or left slouched at the back, and touques worked in ribbed and cabled wool for real cold, some finished with a pom. Brimless shapes sit closer still, a fitted beret among them, while a soft bucket turns its short brim down the whole way round.

Brimmed shapes work the other way, the crown creased or blocked and the edge stiffened to hold its line: baseball caps with a curved peak, fedoras and trilbies pinched at the front, and wide-brim sun hats that shade the shoulder. Materials follow the season, merino, lambswool and cashmere blends for knits, wool and fur felt for structured crowns, cotton twill for caps, and straw, raffia or paper braid for summer.
