A pair cut in rigid cotton denim usually gives about half an inch to a full inch at the waist within the first few wears, with more movement at the seat and knee where the fabric is worked hardest. Much of that comes back in the wash, and a warm wash with a tumble dry pulls it back further than a cold wash and a hang dry will. So it is worth buying to a snug but comfortably fastened fit rather than sizing up. Stretch blends travel further and recover further.

Front rise is the distance from the top of the waistband down to the crotch seam: roughly 7 to 8 inches on a low rise, 9 to 10 on a mid rise, 11 to 12 on a high rise. Inseam runs from that same crotch seam straight down the inside leg to the hem, commonly 26 to 28 inches on a cropped pair and 30 to 34 on a full length.
