Leg length and the cut of the waistband settle a pair of underwear long before the fabric does. Briefs stop at the hip with no leg at all and sit closest to the body; trunks add a short leg that ends high on the thigh, holding shape without riding up under a slim trouser. Boxer briefs run that leg longer, down toward mid-thigh, where they stop skin rubbing under denim or on a run, while loose woven boxers hang free from a full-cut seat and trade support for air.

Most are knitted from combed cotton or a cotton blend with a little elastane for recovery, with modal and micromodal used where a softer, cooler hand is wanted and stretch mesh where breathability matters most. Waistbands are usually a jacquard-woven elastic, and flat or covered seams keep bulk down inside a trouser.

What is the difference between trunks and boxer briefs?

Both are knitted with a leg and a fitted waistband, so the difference is length. A trunk's leg ends roughly 8 to 10cm below the waistband, high on the thigh, which reads squarer under slim trousers and shorts. A boxer brief runs 15 to 18cm or more and reaches mid-thigh, which stops chafing on longer wear and stays put under denim. Shorter legs are more likely to ride up on a wider thigh.

How should men's underwear be washed to keep its shape?

Wash at 30C on a normal cycle with like colours, and turn printed waistbands inward. Heat is what kills elastane, so skip the tumble dryer or use the lowest setting and take the garments out while slightly damp; a hot dry cycle is the usual reason a waistband goes slack after a few months. Fabric softener coats the fibres and reduces absorbency, so leave it out.
