Both begin as a looped knit. French terry leaves the loops intact on the inside face, so the cloth stays lighter, breathes well and holds its shape, which makes it wearable year round. Fleece brushes those loops open into a soft nap that traps air, so it runs warmer and bulkier but mats more readily after repeated washing. Terry drapes closer to the body, while fleece adds visible volume through the sleeve and chest.

Cotton shrinks with heat rather than water. Wash cold or at 30C on a gentle cycle, turn pieces inside out to protect the brushed face, and skip fabric softener, which coats the fibres and flattens the loop. The dryer does most of the damage, so either dry flat or tumble on low and take the piece out slightly damp. Expect roughly three to five percent shrinkage on untreated cotton after a first hot wash, mostly in length.
