Most men's socks are sold in ranges, because the knit stretches. A medium generally covers EU 39 to 42, or UK 6 to 8, and a large covers EU 43 to 46, or UK 9 to 11. European brands often print the range itself, such as 43 to 46. If a pair lists foot length instead, measure heel to longest toe: EU 42 is roughly 26 cm. When you fall between sizes, size up, as a stretched sock wears through faster.

With loafers and low-cut shoes, a no-show or invisible sock with a silicone heel grip stays hidden below the shoe line, whereas an ankle sock will usually peek over the collar. With tailoring, go the other way: mid-calf or over-the-calf, so no bare leg appears when you sit down and cross a knee.
