A vulcanised sole is bonded to the upper with heat and a strip of foxing tape wrapped around the join, giving a thin, flexible sole with a low profile, which is the classic court shoe construction. A cupsole is moulded as one piece that the upper drops into, then stitched or cemented around the edge, so the shoe sits taller, feels stiffer and lasts longer. Vulcanised pairs break in quickly, while cupsoles hold their shape.

Creasing happens where the upper bends as the foot flexes, and leather has to fold somewhere. A shoe that is too long creases worse, because the empty space collapses ahead of the toes. Fit properly, lace fully to the top so the foot cannot slide forward, and use a shoe tree or paper between wears to hold the toe box open. Softer unlined leathers crease sooner than a coated or structured upper, and nothing prevents it entirely.
