Largely geography. Touque, also spelled toque, is the Canadian word for a close-fitting knitted cap, while beanie is the term used in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia for the same thing. Where people do draw a line, a touque tends to mean the cuffed, snug winter version in wool or acrylic, and beanie covers everything knitted, including uncuffed, slouchy and fine-gauge caps worn through the year.

Run a soft tape around your head about a centimetre above the ears and across the middle of the forehead, keeping it level and snug but not tight. That circumference maps straight onto fitted sizing: roughly 55 cm is small, 57 cm medium, 59 cm large and 61 cm extra large. Snapbacks, strapbacks and knitted caps stretch across several of those ranges, so the measurement matters most for a fitted, non-adjustable crown.
