A hat is decided at the brow and in the crown. Peaked styles shade the eyes, with a curve or a flat edge to the visor and a crown that is either structured, holding its height unworn, or unstructured, collapsing softly onto the head. Brims that run the whole way round shade further and read more casual. Everything brimless sits closer, taking its shape from the head rather than imposing one.

That is where beanies and touques live, and the difference between them is mostly where you are standing: the same knitted cap, worn cuffed or uncuffed, close to the skull or left to slouch at the back. Gauge does the rest, a fine rib sitting neatly under a hood while a chunky one stands away from the head. Merino and lambswool hold warmth without itch, cashmere softens it, and twill, felt and nylon carry the brimmed styles.
