Women's Satchel & Crossbody Bags

Strap drop decides where a bag lands on the body, and where it lands decides what it is good for. A long adjustable strap worn diagonally sits at the hip, spreads weight across the back and leaves both hands free; shorten it and the same bag rides at the waist, closer and quicker to reach into. Structured satchels add a top handle, so they can also be carried by hand at the side.

Proportion follows from that. Flat north-south shapes under a turn-lock flap stay close to the body; wider east-west bodies open across the top; camera bags on broad webbing straps sit low and square; saddle shapes curve to the hip; mini pouches on a fine chain carry only a phone and cards. Grained and smooth calfskin, saffiano, suede, coated canvas and nylon pair with chain or webbing straps, buckle sliders and twill or suede linings.

Women's Satchel & Crossbody Bags

What crossbody strap drop should I look for?

Drop is the distance from the highest point of the strap down to the top of the bag, so on a bag hanging from a looped strap it is roughly half the total strap length. Put a tape at the top of your shoulder and run it diagonally to where you want the bag to sit, usually the hip bone, and that number is your target. Typical crossbody drops fall between 20 and 24 inches, around 51 to 61 cm; shorter frames usually land near the bottom of that range and taller ones near the top, which is what the slider on an adjustable strap is there to cover.

What is the difference between a satchel and a crossbody bag?

They describe different things, which is why one bag can be both. Satchel is a construction: a stiffened, flat-bottomed body that stands on its own, usually with a top handle and often a fold-over flap fastened by a buckle or turn-lock. Crossbody is a way of carrying, meaning a long strap over one shoulder and diagonally across the torso. A structured satchel supplied with a removable long strap is a satchel worn crossbody; a soft pouch on a long chain is only ever a way of carrying, never a construction.
