Rise is the distance from the crotch seam up to the top of the waistband at the front, and it decides where the shorts sit on the body independently of length. Roughly, a high rise measures 28cm or more and sits at or above the natural waist, a mid rise runs about 22 to 27cm, and anything under 22cm counts as low. A higher rise lengthens the visible leg, which is why short inseams are usually paired with one.

Rigid, non-stretch denim should feel firm at the waist and hip when new, because it relaxes by around half a size with wear and body heat. Denim cut with elastane behaves the opposite way, giving immediately and then bagging out, so buy that snug. Sit down before deciding: check the waistband does not gape at the back and that the hem is not cutting into the thigh, which is where most pairs fail.
