Patent is a lacquered surface rather than an open one, so it takes no conditioner; a cloth dampened with water is enough, and cream will only haze it. It also picks up dye from dark denim, and that transfer sets if it is left, so deal with it the same day. Store patent pieces apart, since the coating can stick to whatever it presses against in a warm room. Smooth leather is the opposite and wants a light conditioner once or twice a year. Vegan pieces need neither: wipe them clean, avoid hard creasing, and keep them out of heat, which is what ages a coated finish fastest.

Belt sizing runs from the fold at the buckle to the middle hole, not to the tip, so a belt normally measures about five centimetres, or two inches, more than your trouser waist size. The surer method is to run a tape through the loops of trousers you already wear, or along a belt that sits right, rather than around bare skin; that reading is the belt length itself, with nothing to add on top. Holes are usually spaced two and a half centimetres apart, five of them, which leaves around ten centimetres of range between the first hole and the last. European belts marked 75, 80 or 85 are quoting that middle-hole measurement in centimetres.
