Small leather goods are judged at the edge. A folded edge turns the material back on itself and stays soft against the hand. A painted edge is built up in thin layers and can be resealed years later. A raw edge leaves the cut face open, so the fibres show and darken as the piece is handled. Thickness settles the rest: a card case wants a slim, firm panel that keeps its shape, and a belt wants a strap heavy enough to hold the waist level without curling.
Surface reads differently at this scale. A grain that would look busy across a coat becomes quiet texture on a wallet, and a patent or high-shine finish shows every mark where a matte one absorbs it. Hardware sets the register: a covered buckle disappears where a plaque announces itself. Vegan finishes, usually a polyurethane coating over a fabric backing, hold their colour instead of patinating, though that coating can crack or lift with age, heat and hard creasing, and it cannot be fed or refinished the way a hide can.
