Where the hem falls does as much work as the fill — cropped at the waist over a knit, at the hip to layer under a coat, or longer through the thigh, where a vest reads as outerwear in its own right. Quilting sets the volume above that: wide channels build loft and bulk, while fine, close quilting keeps the line flat enough to sit under a jacket.

Hooded styles carry the layer up to the neck, fixed or packed into a high collar, and shift the piece toward outerwear worn on its own. Insulation splits between down, warmest for its weight and compressible, and synthetic fill, which keeps working when damp. Outer faces are usually fine woven nylon or polyester with a water-repellent finish, and a drawcord hem decides whether a vest pulls in at the waist or hangs straight.

What is the difference between a vest and a gilet?

They are the same garment under two names: a sleeveless layer worn over a top for core warmth. Gilet is the term used in the UK and much of Europe, vest in North America, though in menswear a vest can also mean the waistcoat of a three-piece suit, which is why the padded version is often called a puffer vest or bodywarmer. If a listing says gilet, expect insulation or a quilted shell rather than tailoring.

Can a down vest go in the washing machine?

Yes, with care. Use a front-loading machine on a gentle cold cycle with a down-specific detergent, since regular detergent strips the natural oils and standard fabric softener flattens the loft permanently. Zip it fully, run an extra rinse, then tumble dry on low with two or three clean tennis balls, which break up the clumps as the fill dries. Expect two to three hours; a vest that comes out lumpy is simply not dry yet.

Are DIHSAN's vests authentic?
