How should a fabric face mask be washed?

Wash it by hand, or on a gentle machine cycle in warm water, and keep it well away from a hot dryer. Heat is what destroys the elastic in ear loops and warps a shaped nose wire, so drying flat in air preserves both. Cotton shells tolerate repeated washing and hold their structure, while silk and jersey linings prefer cooler water. If the design takes a filter insert, remove it before the mask goes anywhere near water.

Which fabric is most comfortable for long wear?

A tightly woven cotton shell keeps its shape through repeated washing and stands further off the mouth, which most people find easier over several hours. Knit and jersey versions stretch closer to the face and pack flatter in a pocket, but cling once they are damp. A soft inner layer in cotton or silk reduces irritation on sensitive skin, and a layered construction generally sits further from the lips than a single stretch panel.
