Go by the interior sleeve dimensions rather than the backpack's outside measurements. A 13-inch ultrabook is roughly 30 x 22cm, a 14-inch about 31 x 22cm, and a 15- or 16-inch machine about 35 x 25cm. Add one to two centimetres of clearance each way, plus another centimetre if you use a padded sleeve. Depth matters too, since a curved or soft-sided pack can measure wide enough on paper and still bind at the corners once loaded.
