Wipe it with a soft dry cloth after wear and let it air before you put it away. If it is hide, condition it sparingly, once or twice a year, and more often if it lives in dry heated air through winter; too much softens a skin past the point where it holds shape. Vegan and coated finishes take no conditioner at all, since it cannot sink into a polyurethane surface and only sits there collecting dust. A damp cloth and a dry one are enough for those. Never machine wash or tumble dry either kind. If it gets wet, blot it and dry it at room temperature, away from radiators. Store it on a wide-shouldered hanger in a cotton cover, never plastic, which traps moisture.

Full-grain keeps the whole outer surface of the hide, marks included, so it is the strongest and the only one that builds a real patina. Top-grain has that surface buffed away and refinished, which makes it thinner, more uniform and less inclined to change. Split comes from the layer underneath and is weaker again. Bonded is not a layer at all: leather fibre ground up and set in polyurethane on a backing, and it wears out first. Vegan leather is a polyurethane film on a fabric backing, even in colour, light, and finished from the start, so it needs no breaking in and takes no conditioner.
