Strap drop is the distance from the highest point of the strap down to the top of the bag, and on a crossbody it works out to roughly half the total strap length. Most adjustable straps cover about 18 to 26 inches of drop. Around 18 inches keeps the bag high, up near the ribs; 21 to 23 inches is the usual setting and puts it on the hip; 26 or more drops it below the hip, onto the top of the thigh. A crossbody strap runs diagonally across the torso rather than hanging straight down, so the drop figure is always longer than the vertical distance the bag actually falls.

A messenger hangs from one long strap worn across the body and rests at the hip, usually under a wide flap, with a main compartment sized for documents or a laptop. A sling is smaller and worn higher and tighter, on a curved strap that lets you swing the bag round to the front and open it without taking it off. Messengers carry more; slings carry less but stay closer to the body and move better in a crowd or on a bike.
