Capacity and bulk pull against each other in every wallet, and the fold is where that argument gets settled. A flat cardholder with four to six slots adds almost nothing to a pocket; a bifold adds more slots and a compartment for notes; compact trifolds and small snap wallets keep the card count and fold down to a smaller footprint.

The long formats work the other way round, trading compactness for order: zip-around continentals that hold notes full length and close on a single zip, French purses with a snap flap over a separate coin section, and travel organisers sized for a passport and boarding pass.
