A wash is a sequence of controlled processes, including enzyme treatments, stone and abrasion work, hand sanding and resin setting, applied after the jean is sewn. On a premium pair those steps are placed deliberately to imitate where a real garment would fade, so the highlights fall along the thigh, behind the knee and at the seat rather than uniformly. That placement, and the fabric chosen to take it, is most of the cost.

Stretch denim blends a small percentage of elastane into cotton, usually between one and three percent. That gives the jean give across the hip and thigh, so a slim or skinny cut can be worn without restriction. The trade-off is recovery: higher stretch is more comfortable but more likely to bag at the knee through the day, while rigid or low-stretch denim holds its shape and moulds to you over time instead.
