Men's Burberry Brit is where the house's weatherproof language stopped being formal. The codes are all present — gabardine, the check, the trench line — but reworked into things you actually reach for on an ordinary morning: a quilted jacket instead of a full-length coat, a shirt instead of a suit, outerwear cut short enough to drive in.

Outerwear is the centre of it. Quilted jackets lined in the house check, car coats and cropped trenches, field jackets, blousons and bombers. Around those sit knitwear, checked and plain shirting, polos and casual trousers, generally held to the house's restrained range of stone, navy, olive and black. Brit was Burberry's casual label rather than its formal one, and the cuts follow that brief closely.

How does a quilted jacket fit compared with a trench coat?

A quilted jacket is generally cut closer and shorter, sized to go over a shirt or a light knit rather than over tailoring. A trench is built with a fuller body and a deeper armhole precisely so that a suit jacket fits underneath it. Take the same nominal size in both and the trench will feel roomier, so judge a quilted jacket by chest measurement and by whether you intend to layer beneath it.

Where does the trench coat design come from?

From military use. Burberry's weatherproof coats were adapted for the needs of military personnel and worn by British officers in the trenches during the First World War, which is where the name comes from. Much of what reads as styling today began as function: storm flaps to shed rain off the shoulder, a belted waist, deep pockets and a double-breasted front. The shape has stayed largely unchanged since.
