All three carried the house's gabardine, check and trench codes, and each was identified by its own wording woven into the label. Burberry later brought them together under one name.

Gabardine is a tightly woven twill that Burberry introduced in 1879: hardwearing, water-resistant and still breathable, which is why it became the standard cloth for the trench coat. It sheds rain and blocks wind without trapping heat against the body the way a rubberised fabric does, and it holds a crisp line, so a coat cut from it keeps its shape through a wet day instead of going limp.
