It is one rectangle doing three jobs. Folded lengthwise it wears as an oversized scarf, opened across the shoulders it becomes a shawl over a coat or a dress, and unfolded fully it is a blanket, which is how the shape earned its name on aeroplanes and trains. Cashmere makes the trick possible, because the fibre gives real warmth at a weight and a packed size that wool cannot match.

Hand wash in cool water with a wool or cashmere detergent, moving the piece gently rather than rubbing or wringing it. Press the water out against the side of the basin, roll the piece in a towel to take the rest, then dry flat and reshape it while still damp. Never hang wet cashmere, because the weight of the water stretches it out of shape and the piece will not recover.
