A fine merino or cashmere knit works under a fitted quilted vest without adding bulk at the armhole; a hoodie or a chunky knit needs a vest with room through the body, so check the fit before layering heavily. In real cold, a thin down or fleece midlayer under the vest beats one thick knit. For a cleaner line, keep the underlayer longer than the vest hem.
