Saffiano is calfskin finished with a fine cross-hatch pressed into the surface and sealed with a protective coating. That treatment makes it firm, scratch-resistant and largely water-repellent, so the wallet holds its shape and its colour through years of pocket wear. Untreated full-grain calfskin starts softer, moulds around what it carries, and darkens into a patina at the corners and folds. Saffiano keeps its finish; calfskin records how it has been used. Neither is more durable in absolute terms — they age in opposite directions.
