MA-1 is the designation of a United States military flight jacket introduced in the 1950s, and it became the template for the modern bomber. The pattern is a nylon shell with a knitted rib collar, cuffs and hem, a two-way front zip, a zipped utility pocket on the left sleeve and a reversible orange lining originally intended as a rescue signal. Fashion versions borrow the shape and the ribbing without the military specification behind it.

The ribbed hem should sit at or just above your hip bone and stay there without riding up, and the cuffs should close around the wrist rather than slipping over the hand. Because the ribbing gathers the body, some visible blousing through the torso is intended; a bomber that pulls flat across the back is too small. Shoulder seams sit deliberately wide on oversized cuts, but on a classic fit they belong at the edge of the shoulder.
