Women's Varsity Jackets

A varsity jacket is a study in contrast: a wool-melton body set against sleeves in a different material, usually leather, with ribbing binding the collar, cuffs and hem. The snap-front placket is the traditional closure, while zip fronts and hoods are the modern reading of the shape. Cropped cuts stop at the natural waist, boxy oversized shapes borrow the menswear proportion outright, and fitted versions bring the side seams in without losing that ribbed frame.

Chenille letters, embroidered patches and appliqué are the point of the style rather than a finish applied to it, and they sit alongside printed backs and striped ribbing. Bodies run in melton wool, boiled wool or quilted nylon; sleeves in leather, suede, satin or the same cloth as the body. Because two materials share one garment, spot-cleaning usually beats a full wash.

How should a varsity jacket fit?

Varsity jackets are traditionally worn with room. The ribbed hem should reach the top of the hip and the ribbed cuffs the wrist bone, with the shoulder seam sitting at or slightly past the edge of the shoulder. Because a wool body has very little stretch, leave enough space across the chest to fasten it over a sweatshirt. Many women take one size up from their usual jacket size for the classic boxy look, or one size down for a fitted, cropped shape.

How do you clean a varsity jacket with wool and leather sleeves?

Keep it out of the washing machine, because the two materials react to water and heat differently and a chenille letter or embroidered patch can pull away. Brush the melton wool body with a soft clothes brush to lift surface dirt, spot-clean marks with a barely damp cloth and a little wool detergent, and wipe the leather sleeves down before conditioning them lightly. For anything more, use a dry cleaner who handles mixed-material garments.
