The hide sets the character of a leather jacket: lambskin falls soft and light against the body, calfskin sits in between, and cowhide brings weight and structure that takes real wear to break in. Biker and moto cuts lead with an asymmetric zip, notched lapels and zipped cuffs; bomber and aviator shapes swap that for ribbing and, on shearling versions, a collar built to turn up. Blazer-cut leather borrows tailoring lines, and longline and trench shapes carry well past the hip.

Suede and nubuck have a brushed nap that marks and wants a brush rather than a cloth; patent and coated finishes throw the light back. Quilted panels, studding, laser-cut perforation and croc or python embossing change the surface without changing the cut. Hardware in silver, gunmetal or gold-tone pulls the whole thing warm or cool.

What is the difference between lambskin and cowhide in a leather jacket?

Lambskin is thin, light and soft. It drapes close to the body and feels supple straight away, but the same fineness means it scuffs and creases more readily, so it rewards careful wear. Cowhide is noticeably thicker and heavier: it resists abrasion, holds a structured shape and only softens once it has been properly worn in, which is why it became the traditional biker hide. Calfskin sits between the two — finer and smoother than cowhide, sturdier than lamb.

How do you care for a leather jacket?

Keep it away from radiators and direct sun, which dry the hide out, and hang it on a broad wooden or padded hanger so the shoulders keep their shape. Wipe marks with a barely damp cloth and let it air dry naturally; never machine wash it. Condition smooth leather once or twice a year with a cream made for garment leather, testing on a hidden seam first. Suede and nubuck take a brush and a dedicated protector spray instead.
