Boxy cuts hold a straight line across the ribs and skim the body rather than following it; fitted and shrunken shapes trace the waist and stop there. Cropped blazers keep a lapel and a tailored shoulder, boleros drop the fastening altogether and sit open over whatever is underneath, and cropped bombers, denim and biker versions carry ribbing, a button placket or an asymmetric zip to the same short length.

Puff and dropped sleeves build volume through the shoulder and upper arm, and sleeveless versions strip it back to the shoulder line. Wool and tweed hold their own structure, leather and denim break in with wear, and cotton twill, satin and knit sit softer against a high waistband. Cropping often shortens the sleeve as well as the body, so a bracelet sleeve is part of the design rather than a fault in the fit.

What length counts as a cropped jacket?

A cropped jacket ends at or above the natural waist, usually somewhere between the underbust and the waistline itself. On a standard size that puts most of them around 40 to 50 cm from the shoulder seam to the hem, against roughly 60 to 70 cm for a regular jacket. Many cropped styles shorten the sleeve to the forearm as well, so read the sleeve measurement alongside the body length rather than assuming one from the other.

What do you wear under a cropped jacket?

Cropped jackets are cut to work with a high-rise waistband, so the hem of the jacket and the top of the trousers or skirt meet without leaving a gap you did not plan. A fitted top or bodysuit tucked in keeps the line clean under a boxy cut, while a longer shirt left deliberately visible below the hem does the opposite and adds length. If the jacket is loose, keep the layer beneath it close to the body.
