How do I store a down coat in the off-season?

Store it clean, dry and loose. Down needs air to hold its loft, so a compression bag or a tightly packed wardrobe rail flattens the clusters over a summer. Hang it on a wide hanger with room either side, or lay it flat in a breathable cotton bag, and keep it away from direct sunlight and damp. Air it for a day before the first cold morning so it recovers fully.

Can down outerwear be worn in the rain?

Light rain and wet snow are fine on a treated shell, which sheds water long enough for a walk between buildings. Sustained rain is the problem: once down absorbs water it collapses, loses most of its insulating value and takes a long time to dry properly. If you are dressing for a genuinely wet day rather than a cold one, a shell that prioritises waterproofing serves you better.
