Utility jacket is the broader category the field jacket sits inside, covering workwear- and military-derived designs built around functional pockets and hard-wearing cloth, including safari jackets, chore coats and cargo styles. On lighter cotton pieces the two names are often used interchangeably.

Waxed cotton is a tightly woven cotton canvas impregnated with a paraffin or beeswax finish, which makes it wind-resistant and able to shed steady rain without any plastic membrane. It is not breathable in the technical sense, and it starts out stiff before softening and moulding to you with wear. Over time the wax rubs thin along creases, cuffs and elbows and lightens the colour there. Re-waxing roughly once a year restores the water resistance and evens the finish out.
