Are Mackage women's down coats cut for heavy layering?

Broadly, no, because they are designed to be the layer. Bodies are shaped close through the waist so the coat holds a line, which leaves less room than a boxy parka would for a thick sweater underneath. A fine-gauge knit or a shirt layers comfortably; a chunky cable or a second jacket usually does not. If you layer heavily, compare the garment's chest measurement rather than relying on the size label alone.
