Women's Down & Shell Jackets

Down and a shell solve two halves of the same problem: down traps warm air, and a shell keeps the weather off it, which is why the two are so often worn together. Insulated pieces run from featherweight layers that compress into their own pocket up to full winter parkas with a storm hood and a hem past the hip. Shells are built for weather rather than warmth — hardshells seal against sustained rain, softshells trade some of that protection for stretch and breathability, and three-in-one systems zip an insulated liner in and out so one jacket covers several seasons.

Fill power measures the loft of down per ounce, so a higher number gives the same warmth for less weight, while fill weight tells you how much down is actually inside. Synthetic insulation keeps working when damp. On shells, a hydrostatic head in millimetres rates water resistance and a breathability figure rates vapour escape; taped seams and storm flaps close off the gaps those numbers do not cover.

What does fill power mean on a down jacket?

Fill power measures loft: how many cubic inches one ounce of down expands to fill. Down rated at 800 fill power lofts to 800 cubic inches per ounce, so it holds the same warmth as a lower grade while using less material. Roughly 600 to 700 is high quality and above 700 is excellent. Fill power alone does not tell you how warm a jacket is, though — check the fill weight, the grams of down actually inside, alongside it.

How do you wash a down jacket and restore the loft?

Use a front-loading machine, a down-specific detergent and a cold, gentle cycle, then add an extra rinse to clear residue that would mat the clusters. Never use fabric softener. Tumble dry on low for two to three hours with two or three clean dryer balls or tennis balls, which break up the clumps as the down dries. The jacket will look flat and lifeless partway through, and it only recovers its loft once completely dry.
