A windbreaker is a thin uninsulated shell built to stop moving air, usually with a water-repellent finish that beads off drizzle for a while before it wets through. A rain jacket adds a waterproof membrane or coating, taped seams and often a storm flap over the zip, and carries a hydrostatic head rating in millimetres: around 5,000 mm handles light rain and 10,000 mm and above handles sustained rain. Windbreakers pack smaller; rain jackets stay dry longer.

DWR stands for durable water repellent, a treatment on the face fabric so water beads and rolls off instead of soaking in. It wears away with abrasion, body oils and dirt, and the first sign is fabric that darkens and clings when wet. Start by washing the jacket in a technical cleaner, which lifts the grime masking the finish, then add gentle heat to reactivate what is left — a low tumble dry, or a warm iron passed over a cloth laid on the fabric, never directly on the shell. Once that stops working, a spray-on or wash-in reproofer replaces it.
