It is lighter and keeps a slimmer outline, but every seam compresses the insulation and lets a little warmth escape. Box-baffle construction runs internal fabric walls between the two layers, so the fill lofts to its full depth and there are no cold seams. Box baffles are warmer and bulkier; sewn-through is the usual choice for lighter, packable jackets.

Down gives more warmth for its weight and compresses far smaller, which is why packable jackets almost always use it. Its weakness is moisture: wet down collapses and stops insulating until it is fully dry. Synthetic fill is heavier and bulkier for the same warmth, but it keeps most of its performance when damp, dries quickly and washes without special handling. For a wet coastal winter, synthetic or treated down is the safer choice.
