Tricot is a warp-knitted fabric, usually polyester or nylon, with fine vertical ribs on the face and a smooth back. It became the classic track jacket cloth because it is light, holds colour well, resists snagging and slides over whatever you are wearing underneath instead of catching on it. It carries a slight sheen and very little warmth, which is why tricot jackets work as a layer rather than as outerwear on their own.

A traditional sports fit follows the body with a little room to move: the shoulder seam at the edge of the shoulder, the ribbed hem at the top of the hip, and the cuffs snug at the wrist. Retro and oversized versions deliberately drop that shoulder seam onto the upper arm and add length through the sleeve. Decide which of the two you want before sizing, because one size up in a classic cut is not the same as an oversized pattern.
