Weight is the first thing you notice, or rather the lack of it. What is the difference between the A-line and the hooded straight-cut shapes?

The A-line, sometimes described as a cocoon, narrows at the shoulder and widens steadily to the hem, so it falls away from the body and layers easily over a knit or a dress. The straight hooded shapes keep a closer, more vertical line through the body and read more like a city coat. Choose the A-line if you want room to layer underneath; choose the hooded cut if you want a slimmer silhouette.

Is a lightweight down jacket warm enough for real cold?

Warmth in down comes from loft rather than from the thickness of the fabric, so a light shell with a good fill can outperform a heavy quilted coat. The trade-off is wind and length: a short, light jacket handles a dry cold well and an exposed wind less well. Layer a wool knit underneath rather than sizing up, and choose a hooded style if you are outside for long stretches.
