How the insulation is held in place decides how warm a puffer is, and the baffles show it from the outside. Sewn-through channels stitch the outer and lining together in rows: light, packable, with a thin cold line at every seam. Box-wall baffles use internal fabric walls so the fill lofts to its full depth and holds heat evenly, at the cost of extra weight. Lengths run from cropped and hip-level through mid-thigh and longline, and gilets take the same construction sleeveless.

Down fill gives the most warmth for the weight, while synthetic fill keeps insulating when it gets wet. Ripstop nylon shells resist tearing and run matte or high-shine; water-repellent and laminated finishes hold off drizzle. Elasticated or ribbed cuffs and drawcord hems seal the warm air in, while two-way zips and detachable hoods let you open the jacket up when you are moving or the weather turns.
